Importance of Travelling in Education
Travel is an important means of knowledge and
education. It is a source of education to all in general and to the youth in
particular. It is a practical education about geography, history, culture,
styles of living, national integration, customs, languages etc all rolled into
one. During the travel a person visits various historical places, meets people
of different regions, faiths, customs and languages. He comes across various
geographical landmarks like famous rivers, mountains, seashores etc. Travel
widens one's mental horizons, enriches experience and imparts a new meaning o
existence. Travel also gives pleasure and joy and brings a welcome change in
routine life. If provides us with an opportunity to escape from our too familiar
and stale environment and takes us to new, interesting and exciting places and
thereby increases our knowledge about people and things. There cannot be a
better way of national integration and unity than travel. It inspires us with
more patriotism and sense of belonging to our people and country. When we visit
new, wonderful and important places, historical monuments, centers of pilgrimage
or spots of national importance we feel a great sense of satisfaction, pleasure
and admiration about our country.
It is travel that satisfies our wanderlust
and inner urge for exploration and spiritual quest for venturing outside one's
known, common and usual surroundings for leisure, education and learning. For
dashing and bold young men and women travel offers unlimited opportunities of
adventure and exploration in the country and beyond its boundaries. It generates
confidence, management skills and sharpens the abilities. There is whole world
to visit, explore and wander about. You can venture into the open seas, try to
measure the deserts, have encounter with forests and its denizens. Or you can
visit the mountains with their majestic snow-packed peaks, silvery rivers and
deep verdant and fascinating villages. A journey through various cities and
towns with their historical sites, religious places and beauty spots can be
equally gripping enchanting and educative.
Educational and training institutions often
take the students and trainees on educational trips and tours. Sometimes they
visit hill stations and come in close contact with nature. At other times they
visit historical places and know much about past history of the country. A trip
to famous dams, river-projects, power houses etc increases our knowledge about
the country's greatness, resources and financial strength. It gives us
opportunity to meet our friends and relations living at far off places.
Similarly, meeting other people belonging to different faiths, communities and
regions is a source of great joy, knowledge and education. By Traveling to
different parts of the country we see with our own eyes how our country is vast
great, varied and yet united. It is rightly said that seeing is believing.
When we see the Lahore fort, we realize how wonderful fantastic and fascinating
it is! When we go to foreign countries we know so many new and wonderful things.
Then we realize how our wonderful earth is
full of beauty, attractions, novelties, variety and diversity. During the travel
we eat different types of foods, enjoy different types of climates and exchange
ideas and experiences with many different types of people. We read about places,
people and things in the books, magazines and newspapers and it provides us with
second rate knowledge. But when we visit these places meet these people, it is a
first hand knowledge, a practical and unforgettable experience. The impressions
and images received during the journey become permanent.
Preparing for a journey is in itself a good
training. You have to do a lot of planning and packing. It is really an art to
arrange and plan a travel. You have to decide what things to take and what not.
You have to decide about your luggage, clothes, route, expenses, time to be
spent and so many other things. You have to economies on expenses time etc. You
try to enjoy and see maximum in minimum time and expense. Sometimes there is an
emergency and then your best skills and abilities come into play and you gain a
lot of confidence. Traveling in groups strengthens fellow-feeling, cooperation,
team spirit and mutuality. It is a valuable training and experience in human
inter-actions cooperation and teamwork. People of a Traveling group can share
different responsibilities according to their individual taste, aptitude,
expertise and capacity. Some are experts in arranging tickets and booking
reservations, others in preparing the itinerary yet others in map-reading or in
acting as interpreters and guides. Thus, the division of labor makes travel
light enjoyable and memorable.
According to bacon Traveling in the young is
part of education, in elder, a part of experience. ''Really, education is
incomplete and experience deficient without Traveling. Travel is like a banquet
to mind and a course of much activity to the body. He who travels much knows
much. Travel makes a wise man better and an active man more active and agile.
True education does not lie in book learning but in seeing and experiencing
things, events and places.
Travel as a means of education,
enlightenment, enrichment and knowledge is matchless. It makes our vision broad,
global and more humane. Today the fast means of Traveling have made it very
easy. We can travel by bus, car, train or aeroplane. We can visit places on
cycle or motorcycle. Traveling on foot has its own charm and adventures. One can
choose his or her own means of Traveling accordingly. Trekking in the mountains,
through the forests etc has its own charm, experience and adventures. It helps
us to sharpen our skills of observation, analysis, facing dangers successfully
and those of management and planning. Young people should travel as often as
they can, individually and in groups because home-keeping youth has ever homely
wits. The wider and more varied and frequent is our travel, the richer our
learning education, experience and enjoyment.
